What Makes Laire Super Special

Laire is one of the best-known and most accessible LARP experiences, if not in the US, then at least on the East Coast. Most people will have heard of LAIRE (Live Action Interactive Roleplaying Explorers) in conjunction with the word LARP/LARPing – if only because it’s a great community to explore your very first LARP game with.

It’s basically high fantasy, which is the best-known LARP genre, so, in general, a very good introduction to the whole LARPing experience – and very well-attended and regular, with games practically every month of the year.

What’s more, Laire’s events are well situated, close enough for players to join from not only New Jersey but also New York and Pennsylvania.

The LARP World And Setting

Laire games take place in the realm of Midlantia, a high-fantasy world inhabited by races and tribes. From humans, elves and dwarves to halflings and a range of mythical races. You start by selecting your character’s race & origin, then move on to select a skill – either mage, rogue or warrior. It’s nice and simplified, so anyone can join and enjoy.

How To Create A Character For Laire LARP

First, start by checking out the LAIRE rulebook, then see the races, basic career options and skills – but look at the advanced careers too, so you know how you might develop your character later on.

The smart move is to connect with some players through the Facebook Group to get some inside info to help you plan your game. Or, try playing as an NPC, so you can get a feel of the game before committing to a character – NPCs play for free.

How Much Does It Cost?

A main character game costs $50 per game, with the option of adding an alt-character at $25 per game. NPCs play for free, and food and drink usually run around $25–$30 per event.

There is a dedicated store space to get tickets for Laire, but you need to register for each event via their website, and take note of rules & policies pre-and post-game. There’s also a Facebook Group to join and engage with players and team members.

What is LARPing?
