Artisans, warriors, magicians and apprentices. Age of Essence LARP in Surrey, UK, is a highly accessible and family-friendly LARPing experience where anyone of any age can create a hero from over 13 fantastic races, and come share brilliant adventures together.

What Makes Age of Essence LARP Super Special

Apart from the awesome fantasy world and numerous playable races and skills, what really sets Age of Essence apart is their devotion to making LARPing family-friendly.

With a lot of LARP content inevitably being adult in nature – confrontations, battle, fighting, life and death situations – many LARPs actually have a minimum age limit (usually 16 or 18). Not Age of Essence, though.

The team have developed an ingenious system that allows players of all ages to join in. How it works is that young players get specially appointed into apprenticeships at an Apprentice Guild. This allows them to partake as fundamental parts of the LARP. But in a safe and friendly environment. Really worth checking out with the fam.

The LARP World And Setting

Age of Essence features a lot of playable races from various homelands, including forested Riverlands, Winterlands, mountainous regions and Dragon’s Breath isle in the north, the Wolfenstrad straight, the Iron Reaches and Sunken Isle in the south.

From these regions come the humans, dwarves, fairfolk and various elven races, as well as beast-kin (humanoid, half-animal creatures) and tribes of orcs, goblins and a unique race called the Rae’lore. You choose your race and skills, including combat and various forms of magic – arcane, spiritual etc. – and then align yourself with one of the six guilds to start playing.

How To Create A Character For Age of Essence

It’s safe to assume that you venture over to their rules and resources to select your race, origin, skills, affinity and guild affiliation to start playing. But it’s worthwhile checking in with the organisers and community on their Facebook page or via email to get your character creation just right.

How Much Does It Cost?

Entry for all single-day LARPs is £7 per event. Monsters and NPCs play for free – email the team for info. Then, there is a small snack shop for a nice picnic lunch (all proceeds go to Age of Essence LARP), where you can get free water, hotdogs (£1), canned drinks (50p) and some doughnuts (50p).

There’s currently no online pre-registration & ticketing process, so the team simply ask that you pop in and say “hello” on their Facebook page, where you’ll be given all the info you need to join the next LARP.

All of the monthly single-day LARPs take place at Nonsuch Park on 23 Ewell Road in Ewell, Surrey, UK. The occasional weekend and multi-day LARP might be in a different location, so just check in with the community beforehand.

What is LARPing?
