New, small (still growing) but done with a lot of heart. WillowCon is the spiritual successor to Nebraska’s legendary but now-defunct WillyCon. Also organised by a dedicated fan team at Wayne State University, the event is still experimenting with programming and finding its feet, but last year saw a really interesting and surprisingly jam-packed schedule of tabletop gaming, scavenger hunts, talks, mini painting workshops, movies, trivia, podcasts and murder mysteries. In fact, this year’s theme is “murder mystery”. Intriguing. See you at WillowCon 2023.

Verde Valley Comic Expo

In the heart of Arizona wine country and with only 11’000-odd residents, Cottonwood’s perhaps not the place you’d expect to see a long-running comic expo. But the people around Verde Valley are so welcoming, and you’ve so many getawayers flooding in over weekends from the Phoenix area, it should perhaps not be surprising the Verde Valley Comic Expo has been running for upwards of 6 years. Supported by the local library, you can actually get in for only $2 if you donate some tinned food for the needy. Definitely worth supporting if you’re in the area.
